Charles Brown

One of the earliest great stylists of R&B, CHARLES BROWN, smooth and elegant, raised by grandparents, studied classical music as a child. Received a B.A. in chemistry, taught high school, had a civil service job as a chemist. First haunting hit was with Johnny Moore guitarist, Johnny Otis on drums and him on piano and vocals: Drifting Blues in 1946. Probably the only song still played and remembered is his Please Come Home For Christmas. “At least I have that going for me,” he mused in 1984. “Me and Bing Crosby. I had some beautiful days. I bought Cadillacs and limousines, the world doesn’t owe me nothin.”
