Charlie Fitzgerald

CHARLIE FITZGERALD was a legendary black club owner in Myrtle Beach during the 40s, 50s and 60s. His swanky club, Charlie's Place on Carver street hosted the likes of such swing and boogie royalty as Basie, Billie Holliday, Little Richard, Jerry Butler, Clovers, Clyde McPhatter, Amos Milburn, Roy Brown & Ruth Brown and Marvin Gaye. Charlie, who survived a violent encounter in 1950 with the percale-covered Klan, was dining in the Kozy Korner and sitting in the white section of the Broadway theater in the 1940s, 20-yrs before Greensboro.
